Throughout Mt. Sterling, there seems to be one name that everyone knows: Beth Barrier. Twenty years ago Beth was the best high school women’s basketball player in the state, the title solidified by winning the honor Miss Basketball in her senior year. Beth’s love for her community and her family shows every time she steps on the court at the Montgomery County High School, where she now coaches the girl’s basketball team. “Coaching is important because it’s a way to give back to your community. It’s a way to impact kids,” Beth says. Her daughter Hayden, a seventh grader at the middle school, plays on the team. She practices and competes in a jersey not seen on the court in 20 years: No. 20, retired after Beth’s last season on the team.
